National School Sport Week was created by the Youth Sport Trust in 2008. The week-long celebration will champion the return of youth sport and its power to bring people together. The Youth Sport Trust are urging schools and families to get involved by holding sporting events throughout the week, especially sports that showcase how inclusive sport can be.

The theme for 2022 is ‘Belonging – a place in sport for every child’.

National School Sport Week will take place from the 20th June to the 26th June 2022.

Why is it important?

School sport should be an important part of a child’s education and development and every child should feel that they have a place to belong. Unfortunately, for many children this isn’t happening. Instead, children are left feeling alienated by sport.

Why your school should incorporate yoga into National School Sports Week and curriculum

Yoga is inherently accessible, and everyone can participate and practice in some form. Yoga classes are inclusive of all abilities, ages, and conditions. Meaning anyone can join in.

Children of all abilities can take part in yoga sessions, they don’t have to be physically fit, fast or have good hand eye co-ordination.  Each child can progress at their own pace, progressing through difficulty levels as they begin to feel comfortable. The non-competitive nature of yoga allows each child to excel and build their confidence, helping to break the negative stigmas they may have around sport.

Schools can use mental health and wellbeing resources to help YogaBugs is taught through fun adventures and stories, children act out the story through yoga and hardly realise they are exercising at all. Yoga in schools has a multitude of emotional and wellbeing benefits as well as physical benefits and fits perfectly within the PE and/or PSHE curriculum.
